An Overview of PFAS Treatment Technologies - Current and Emerging Approaches

Series Title: An Overview of PFAS Treatment Technologies – Current and Emerging Approaches

Description: The webinar is on current and emerging treatment technologies for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). We are bringing together renowned experts in PFAS treatment technologies, including industrial waste solutions providers, academic researchers, and conventional and innovative equipment manufacturers to explore the rapidly evolving world of PFAS treatment.

Title: A Review of Foam Fractionation and Supercritical Water Oxidation Technology

Description: Shaun Melrose from Crystal Clean will discuss the utility of foam fractionation technology for aqueous PFAS waste streams and will present real-life results from industrial-scale systems. The successful deployment of supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) technology for PFAS destruction will be presented by Rick Gillespie from Revive Environmental. Together, these technologies are commercially proven, well understood, and provide a solid foundation for the treatment challenges that PFAS pose.

Title: Emerging PFAS Treatment Technologies – Advanced Membranes and Photo-activated Reductive Defluorinating

Description: Dr. Christopher Bellona, an Associated Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the Colorado School of Mines, will present the current state of the science as it relates to the use of membranes including reverse osmosis and nanofiltration technologies as part of the PFAS treatment puzzle. Dr. Denise Kay, CEO of Enspired Solutions, will discuss an advanced PFAS treatment system that employs photo-activated reductive defluorination (PRD) technology and her presentation will include an overview of the technology, its ability to treat a diverse set of aqueous PFAS waste streams, the scalability of the technology and case studies on field application.

Matt Traister, Regional Operations Director, Ramboll

Mr. Traister is a Regional Operations Director for Ramboll and is based in Cincinnati, OH. With more than three decades of environmental consulting experience, Mr. Traister has been involved in several projects, both domestically and abroad, involving the quantification and control of PFAS emissions and the study of their fate and transport. These projects have been performed for surface coating operations, chemical manufacturers, semiconductor facilities, textile finishing operations and remediation systems. The author of more than 40 technical publications and peer-reviewed journal articles, Mr. Traister serves as the company’s subject matter expert related to air quality matters involving PFAS.

Presenters:

Shaun Melrose, Snr PFAS Operations Manager, Crystal-Clean

Mr. Melrose is the Snr PFAS Operations Manager for Crystal-Clean and is based in Mooresville, NC. With more than 20 years of large scale Agricultural and Environmental experience spanning two continents.  Most Recently he held the position of VP North America for EPOC Enviro and led the startup and establishment of a new manufacturing facility in North Carolina to manufacture one of the worlds most technically advanced foam fractionation water treatment plants for PFAS the SAFF40 from EPOC Enviro.

Rick Gillespie,Chief Commercial Officer, Revive Environmental

Rick Gillespie, Chief Commercial Officer at Revive Environmental since July 2023, spearheads the company's mission to ensure clean water by destroying PFAS. With over 25 years in hazardous waste remediation, Rick excels in innovative treatment technologies for PFAS, chlorinated solvents, petroleum hydrocarbons, and metals in soils and groundwater.

At Revive, Rick leads the commercial efforts to destroy PFAS in AFFF, landfill leachate, industrial wastewater, and contaminated groundwater. His experience includes AFFF foam transition projects across different industries, including commercial airports, oil and gas, and industrial facilities.  In addition, he has experience combining PFAS destruction with supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) with separation/concentration technologies to address dilute PFAS-laden waste streams.

Previously, Rick spent 24 years at Regenesis, driving sales and business development in remediation and vapor intrusion mitigation. His collaborations with E&C firms, regulatory agencies, private industry, and DoD clients have yielded successful outcomes at over 1,000 sites.

Rick began his career at Battelle Memorial Institute, contributing to key USAF initiatives and co-authoring the Air Sparging Design Paradigm. He holds a B.S. in Environmental Science from the University of Oklahoma.
